Most people want a dazzling, white smile. This is probably one of the reasons why teeth whitening is one of the most requested procedures in the US. According to a report, Americans spend almost $2 billion every year to have a bright smile.

Accordingly, our teeth can go from white to not so bright for many reasons. These include the food and drink we consume. Coffee, red wine, and tea have intense color pigments that can discolor teeth.

Another reason is tobacco consumption. Tobacco contains tar and nicotine that can stain our teeth. Now that we know some of the culprits behind discolored teeth, let’s take a look at how we can whiten and maintain them.

Bleaching Products

These products contain hydrogen or carbamide peroxide that effectively remove deep stains on the teeth. They can even make the teeth lighter than their natural shade.

Although you can buy bleaching products over-the-counter, the American Dental Association or ADA recommends that you consult with your dentist first before bleaching your teeth. This way, you can be sure that the products you buy are safe. Your dentist may also provide you a professional take-home bleaching kits.

Whitening Toothpaste and Mouthwashes

These products are good for maintenance purposes. If you have visited your dentist for teeth whitening, or if you have used a bleaching product, toothpaste and mouthwashes can help maintain your teeth. Toothpastes are especially good at removing surface stains.

Fruits and Vegetables

Eating fruits and vegetables like apple, celery, kale, carrots, and radishes can help remove bacteria from your teeth and mouth. Although they can’t really give you those white teeth you want, they can keep stains from forming in the first place. Not to mention they’re good for your health too.
